The 71st anniversary of Independence Day of India was celebrated on Wednesday the 15th August 2018 in Abu Dhabi with traditional enthusiasm. Ambassador Navdeep Suri unfurled the Indian Tricolor at the Embassy premises and all present including school children sang the National Anthem.
It was followed by Ambassador Suri reading out the Address to the Nation by the Hon'ble President of India. He highlighted the excellent relations existing between India and the UAE and thanked Emirati and other foreign friends of India for their good wishes on India's Independence Day. Ambassador Suri drew attention to the pro-active role taken by the Mission, expatriate Indian associations and Pravasi Bharatiya Sahayata Kendra to reach out to eligible Indian nationals for availing of ongoing Amnesty offered by UAE government to regularize their stay or leave the country without penalties. He also invited Indian, Emirati and other foreign youth to participate in the Bharat Ko Janiye/Know India Quiz which will not only help them to familiarize and understand India but also provide a chance to win fully paid fortnight-long trips to India to attend Republic Day Parade at the famous Raj Path in New Delhi and several other cities. Ambassador exhorted schools to participate in larger numbers in the Ambassador Cup Soccer tournament for school girls in January 2019. He informed of the ‘Open House’ policy of the Mission in which any Indian national can meet any official of the Embassy without appointment between 09:00 AM to 12:30 PM every working day.
A short cultural program followed in the Embassy auditorium in which a mesmerizing performance on Sarod and Tabla was given by Troilee Dutta and Soumen Hazra duo. Bhutte Manganiar Group from Rajasthan flew in from India for the occasion, sang patriotic songs. Ladies of Indian Ladies Association gave enthralling dance performances.
Ambassador gave a message to the Indian Community via popular FM station Radio Mirchi. Ambassador along with Counsellor Mr M Rajamurugan and First Secretary Ms. Pooja Vernekar visited Al Shahama camp to express solidarity with the fellow Indian workers seeking to avail of UAE Amnesty program. Three leading English language newspapers with the largest circulation Gulf News, Khaleej Times and The Gulf Today brought out voluminous special supplements on the occasion of India’s 72nd Independence Day.
